Photos from cycling at Philly LiveStrong Challenge

The day started VERY early.  My Dad went with me and we had a smooth drive to the Challenge.  Shortly after we arrived, we found Scott and soon more Team Smitty members filtered in and got their bikes and gear ready.

Getting Ready

The rain & the tire had me a little nervous.  I had some assistance with the tire and it seemed to be working fine.  I’m not experienced at replacing the front wheel and wanted to make sure I had it on right.  Once it seemed to be correct, I took the bike for a quick spin to make sure the wheel wouldn’t fall off.

Heading to the start line

Once we were over at the starting area we took a quick team pic.  Next year, we’ll need to think about the background… just for the record… we’re Team SMitty.

Jim's back- why we ride

I was nice to see John’s name on the back of Jim’s jersey.

Soon the ride started and we were on our way.  I can’t thank Jim enough for riding along with me and instilling in me the confidence I needed to know that “Yes, I can do this!”

Check out those awesome jerseys!  It looks great to see Team Smitty riding!

All Done!!!!

I DID IT!!!

On top of just finishing… I finished easily… I could have gone out and done more… legs felt fine.  It gave me a huge confidence boost.  John would have been proud of me!  Not only had I done it, but I could have done more… NEXT YEAR!!!

As an added bonus, I got to see Lance cross the line!

& I was THIS close to him!

Wonder what it feels like to be the person who gets to tell Lance where to go… lol…

I’m proud of myself for having a successful first bike ride at the Challenge.  Next year…  I’ll go further!

I also want to give a shout out to my supporters- Beth Birney, John Brown, Michael Daniels, Heather Gatta, Alexis Guethler, Art & Chris Hailer, The Myers Family, Mary Ohara, and Sherri Suhr.  THANK YOU!!!

About Mary K. Smith

I was widowed in July 2009, when I lost my beloved husband, John, to melanoma. Cancer SUCKS. We have a young son who was just a year old when his father died. I live on a small farm in Maryland which is home to horses, cats, and a dog. I started this blog as a way for me to heal, a way to remember my husband, and eventually I'd like to share it with our son so he can see the love that his father had for him, the love that we had for each other, what a great person his father was, and how hard his father fought to live.
