“Pictures of Daddy!!!”

A few days ago, Nathaniel was coming down the steps.  He started gesturing and getting excited & said, “Pictures of Daddy!!!” and was excitedly showing me photos.  He pointed and said, “Daddy!”  “Daddy!”  “Daddy!”

His statement simultaneously filled my heart with joy and sadness.  Oh, how I love that he’s proud to show me pics of his Daddy and that he recognizes him.  But at the same time, the only thing he’ll have is photos.  Too young for memories…

I scooped kiddo up at the bottom of the steps and gave him a huge hug.  While choking back tears, I told him how much his Daddy loves him and loves us…

Life just isn’t fair sometimes…

About Mary K. Smith

I was widowed in July 2009, when I lost my beloved husband, John, to melanoma. Cancer SUCKS. We have a young son who was just a year old when his father died. I live on a small farm in Maryland which is home to horses, cats, and a dog. I started this blog as a way for me to heal, a way to remember my husband, and eventually I'd like to share it with our son so he can see the love that his father had for him, the love that we had for each other, what a great person his father was, and how hard his father fought to live.
